When I heard about this I was amazed, I actually thought it was a joke but low and behold the Bush administration did it again, but this time it might not go their way. After 9/11 and all the "security upgrades" (a.k.a. removing your shoes to be x-rayed) we all thought that boarder security was one of the most important things on the Bush administrations agenda.
Being a Canadian I have been watching the debate about forcing Canadian citizens to carry passports to cross the boarder, currently all you need is a birth certificate and a valid piece of government issued photo ID. But, post 9/11 I made the decision to always use my passport to travel into the U.S. simply because I think it makes things easier at boarder crossings. And now after all this talk about trying to protect the U.S. against Canadians the Bush administration wants to sell the rights to protect six U.S. ports to a company controlled by the United Arab Emirates a country known to have terrorist ties. Is it just me or do I see a double standard?
And what really amazed me is that Bush, yes the guy you voted into office (twice), has said that he will use his Presidential veto powers to stop any bill that would get in the way of this deal. WHAT? George W. Bush has never used his veto powers for anything and now he's going to fight for a country with terrorist ties, WHAT?
If you watch the Situation Room on CNN you have probably become familiar with Jack Cafferty, his commentary is always funny and almost always on point. Today he layed this out just right,
"...this might be the straw that finally breaks the camel's back ... There are now actually Senators and Congressmen and Governors and Mayors telling the White House 'you're not gonna do this.' And it's about time. No one has said "no" to this administration on anything that matters in a very long time. Well this matters. It matters a lot. If this deal is allowed to go through, we deserve whatever we get."
"A country with ties to terrorists will have a presence at six critical doorways to our country. And if anyone thinks that the terrorists, in time, won't figure out how to exploit that, then we're all done. Nothing's happened yet, mind you, but if our elected representatives don't do everything in their power to stop this thing, each of us should vow to work tirelessly to see that they are removed from public office. We're at a crossroads - which way will we choose?"
He's right, if there is another major attack on U.S. soil because of this, don't come looking for help cause this one is on you Mr. Bush. I'm sorry if I sound callas but its true, you can't give up control on something as important as port security to another country, it just doesn't make sense. They are your ports, so protect them and if you can't, close them. It just shows how completely incompetent Dubya really is. You would think that when other elected officials are telling you "don't do it" you would listen. Your really get the feeling that dealing with Bush is like dealing with a child once he's set his mind on something it will take a major event to change it, so lets hope that never happens.
Well from up here in Canada I wish you luck 'cause this could get ugly.
